How You May Be Underestimating Pigeons In New York City

June 19, 2020

These demure and drab-colored birds are some of the most destructive pests around. Today we are talking about pigeons. We don’t normally pay much attention to the humble pigeon. In fact, they almost blend into the surrounding landscape with their grey feathers, plump bodies, and shiny purple throats. Those that do take time to notice these feathery friends are probably frequent feeders, supplying the populations with grain or seeds. Unfortunately, this activity may prove dangerous in the most unlikely way.

Pest birds such as pigeons are capable of breeding only when food is plentiful enough to support the healthy development of their eggs.  In the wild, this may only be during a certain window of the spring season. For city pigeons, however, breeding may occur during any time of year. Reproducing up to six times per year, these pest birds quickly overtake and overgrow their chosen nesting sites.

Though they might look a little goofy with their wobbly strides and head bobs, pigeons are dangerous citizens of the city. These pest birds are usually found in areas such as:

  • Abandoned buildings

  • The underside of bridges

  • Chimney pots

  • Gutters

  • Roof spaces

  • Water Tanks

Once pigeons find a place to nest, they will be sure to let all their friends and neighbors know. Pigeons nest in groups of up to 100 members, closely clustering their young in tight packs along the edges of buildings, rooftops, and commercial businesses. Unless populations are swiftly mitigated, a concerning health and safety risk will likely manifest in full.

The Many Dangers Of New York City Pigeons

Pigeons may not look like mischievous city fiends, but the truth is these pest birds are dangerous, destructive, and downright annoying animals.

  • Disease: Pigeons are capable of spreading dangerous strains of disease to human vectors, including histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis.

  • Destruction: The excrement of a pigeon is a powerful thing. Known to corrode paint and some wooden structures, there is a lot more than waste in these bird’s plentiful droppings.

  • Danger: Higher dropping densities lead to slipping hazards, especially during the colder months.

  • Droppings:  Too many droppings around a specific area will greatly erode structures and significantly damage properties.

Fortunately, there are some ways to make your property less hospitable to pigeons looking to roost.

  • No matter how cute they seem, don’t feed the birds! Pigeons have an excellent memory and will visit your property often in hopes of grabbing another quick meal. In addition, pigeons around your property may experience a population boom due to higher food availability.

  • Remove nesting sites as often as possible. Pigeons prefer areas with a roof above them, as well as three walls to mitigate wind and weather. Block or otherwise seal these areas off as securely as possible.

  • Trim back any shrubbery or vegetation that could be providing shelter for pigeons. Pest birds are far less likely to hang around an area with no sheltering options.
